ChiroTaping®Therapy
Chiro (Greek for hand) + tape
ChiroTape® is a cotton-based elastic tape and does not contain any medications (drugs). Its success is based upon a special application technique (ChiroTaping®Therapy) and is applied on a self-adhesive, skin-friendly acrylic coating by medical personnel.
ChiroTaping®Therapy is primarily used for pain therapy. It supplements many treatment techniques such as physiotherapy, manual therapy and massage.
ChiroTape® is being used more frequently for day-to-day complaints (such as classic aches from office activity, PMS, etc.) and as prohylaxis. It supports the body's own healing process and positively influences the neurological and circulatory system of the human body.
This type of taping has become a permanent fixture in professional sports. ChiroTaping®Therapy it is also regularly used by the members of the professional ice hockey team, the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg, to achieve immediate relief in this injury-prone sport.
How it works
Wavy elevations in the skin are produced when ChiroTape® is adhered. Pressure in the tissue is thereby reduced by increasing the space between the skin and muscles (see Fig. 1). This subsequently enhances lymph and blood circulation.
The additional stimulation of receptors (proprioceptive stimuli) improves joint function and stabilizes muscle tone. Pain decreases as a consequence of the reduced pressure in the affected tissue.
Increased space and activation achieve reduced pressure and improved metabolism. By stimulating specific skin receptors (mechanoreceptors), pain receptors are suppressed, and the body's own pain regulation mechanism is activated. This principle is also employed in ChiroTaping®Therapy. This is why people report an immediate effect such as reduction of pain and increased strength of the affected muscles directly after the tape is applied.
Conventional tape methods can only immobilize the joints and restrict movement with non-stretchable materials. This frequently restricts circulation which is undesirable.
Since human muscles not only move the body but also influence the circulatory and lymph systems and regulate body temperature, it is highly advantageous to retain the functionality of all muscles without any restrictions.
In contrast to classical taping, ChiroTaping®Therapy does not primarily seek to stabilize and functionally reinforce the joints and muscles. Its goal is to enable or enhance the body's own healing mechanisms while retaining complete freedom of mobility of the skin, joints and muscles.
The application technique has a major influence on the success of therapy. Since even small deviations in the correct technique can produce completely different results, extensive knowledge of ChiroTaping®Therapy is essential before it is applied. A holistic perspective of the human body with its many interacting, diverse structures such as the skin, fascia, muscles, meridians, etc. form the therapeutic basis of ChiroTaping®Therapy.
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, a thorough visual examination and determination of functions, as well as a thorough patient history are essential to fully comprehend the problems of the human body.
